A catalytic converter consists of a catalyst substrate (monolith) coated with a complex substance consisting of various inorganic oxides – the so-called washcoat – and various noble metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. This substance can be applied to a ceramic or metal monolith.

As they flow through the catalytic converter, the carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) produced as pollutants during combustion come in contact with the noble metals embedded in the washcoat and, in the case of a three-way catalytic converter, are oxidised by chemical reaction to water vapour (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and reduced to nitrogen (N2).

The catalytic converter is subject to extreme mechanical and thermal loads during the catalytic reaction. For this reason, in ERNST catalytic converters the monolith, in particular, is made of a material which reliably withstands large temperature fluctuations, gas pulsation and vibrations.

Only a catalytic converter dimensioned to suit the engine and amply coated with noble metal ensures a high conversion rate over the entire life of the catalytic converter. ERNST guarantees these premium features in all its catalytic converters.

The canning of the monolith plays a decisive role in the effective prevention of vibration-induced breaking of the ceramic body. A well co-ordinated canning process in which the metal casing is adapted to the size of the monolith will exclude the risk of ceramic monolith breakage.

A further premium feature is the choice of materials. ERNST uses exclusively high-grade materials for the internal structure. The casing is made entirely of high-grade steel.

In series quality

ERNST offers a wide range of long-lived catalytic converters whose volumes correspond to the components used in the series. The comprehensive ERNST catalytic converter range comprises replacement and upgrade catalytic converters for all popular vehicle models – precisely matched to the particular model and bearing ECE approval, of course.
