An example familiar to every expert, and which one can currently see rolling into garages in increasing numbers: older VW diesel cars with over 100,000 km in service and a booming exhaust system. Definitely a new system has to be installed. The quality-minded convince their customers to take an ERNST premium exhaust system which functions optimally and has a long life. But then – a setback: the new system booms louder than the old one. ERNST examined these vehicles and found that the cause is not the new exhaust system.

In the old system, the completely corroded interior parts offered little resistance to the exhaust flow. The intact interior parts now transmit more vibrations to the system again. When these vibrations caused by the exhaust flow join with the mechanical vibrations of the engine, the result is loud booming noises.
The solution is a pipe with an integral flexible section, which you install upstream of the centre silencer in place of the standard pipe. This decouples the exhaust system from the mechanical vibrations of the engine. The booming noise disappears. The old baby runs smoother and quieter over the entire engine speed range, almost like a new car!
Expert advice engenders trust
That takes us to the next use for the flexible helper. In almost all new vehicles the flexible parts are components of the front part of the exhaust system – and a notorious weak point. So it pays to examine the flexible tube first. Often you can then tell your customer that he doesn’t need a new catalytic converter at all. You will remember his relieved look for a long time to come – and he will remember a garage that he can trust all the way.
